A
team of eight graduate students from The Pennsylvania State
University’s Center for Watershed Stewardship began
phase 1 of the Keystone Project of the Spruce Creek Watershed
in fall of 2003. The intention of the project was to conduct
an assessment of the condition of the resources throughout
the watershed, and also to facilitate support for its stewardship.
The Spruce Creek watershed includes sections of six townships
in Centre and Huntingdon Counties and encompasses the drainage
areas of Beaver Branch, Fowler Run, Halfmoon Creek, and Warrior’s
Mark Run. All of the residents in these areas make up the
Spruce Creek Watershed Community (SCWC). This watershed is
important for many reasons at local, state and national scales.
Not only does Spruce Creek host a renowned trout fishery,
but it is also a part of the larger Juniata and Susquehanna
River Basins, which eventually drain to the Chesapeake Bay
(an internationally important ecosystem). The overall quality
of the creek, however, is dependant on a healthy watershed.
