Computer technology can and is used as an effective tool in many
ways in the practice of landscape architecture. Therefore, the emphasis
of our instruction is not on a small set of technical skills or
a specific software package but on the creation of a critical attitude
toward digital design and visualization tools which requires:
1. Students to have a conceptual knowledge of
what digital design is and what fundamental structure vocabulary,
and functions are common to all digital design tools
2. Students to have the ability to inquire, experiment, and discover
similarities and differences between specific software packages
3. Students to have the ability to make connections between digital
design tools and the design process in theory and application
4. Students to have a realistic understanding of the capabilities
and appropriateness of computer applications for design.
These skills provide the breadth necessary for
computer literacy in the context of design. Although technology
is constantly changing, students equipped with a critical attitude
can continue to discover, evaluate, and apply new technology as
it evolves and emerges.
