Interests
History, Design Theory

Bonj Szczygiel is Associate Director of The Center for Studies in Landscape History. Her research interests focus on design history, 19th-century urban design and health issues especially as related to gender and cultural landscape studies. She was primary editor of Gendered Landscapes: An Interdisciplinary Exploration of Past Place and Space (2000). Her recent publications include “Nineteenth Century Medical Landscapes: John Rauch, Frederick Law Olmsted and the Search for Salubrity” Bulletin of the History of Medicine (Winter 2000) and “City Beautiful Revisited: An Analysis of 19th Century Civic Improvement Efforts” (forthcoming, Jan 2003) Journal of Urban History. She joined the faculty at Penn State in 1996 as a second career, having previously spent ten years as a legal advocate of the rights of native Americans and indigent persons within the federal Legal Services program, and as a member of VISTA.
