The intent of the semester abroad is to remove
students from the familiar context of University Park and immerse
them in an unfamiliar environment. There they undertake studies
that challenge them to realize that every place possesses a unique
set of issues which they—as designers of environments—must
come to understand and respect. Inherent in this is another learning
experience as well. By temporarily living in an environment other
than the United States, students will come to realize the unique
characteristics of our national society, culture, and landscape,
and of design in the United States.
The semester abroad was established as a
requirement of the undergraduate landscape architecture curriculum
in 1995. Beginning in 1996, our students joined the Rome program,
established by the architecture department in 1990. Sede di Roma,
our shared campus in the center of Rome and housed in the Palazzo
Doria Pamphilli, is now providing a remarkable educational experience
for all students of architecture and landscape architecture. Undergraduate
students in both departments spend a semester during their fourth
year in Rome studying urban design and expanding their cultural
understanding. |
