Our M.L.A. is targeted specifically toward students who already hold a professional degree in Landscape Architecture-thus the term "post-professional" describes the program. Individuals who hold a professional degree in Architecture are also eligible to apply for admission to our M.L.A.; but these applicants must understand that our post-professional curriculum will not prepare them to practice Landscape Architecture.
Why go back to school for a master's degree if you already have a professional design degree? Two fundamental reasons:
To gain expertise in a specific topical area that will help you in your professional work; or
To obtain a master's degree as a credential necessary for teaching landscape architecture.
The Penn State M.L.A. offers significant graduate opportunities based on our strengths. These include:
Graduate study opportunities aligned with our four research centers:
- The Hamer Center for Community Design Assistance (offering a graduate option in Community and Urban Design);
- The Center for Watershed Stewardship (offering a graduate option in Watershed Stewardship);
- The Stuckeman Center for Design Computing; and
- The Historic Places Initiative;
Our faculty engage in significant research and creative activities, providing exciting research assistantship opportunities and the potential for graduate students to "spin off" a master's project from faculty work;
Our department and our university are committed to high-quality instruction. Graduate students interested in learning effective teaching methods can work with our faculty on teaching teams, plus take courses or pursue a teaching certificate through the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence.
The primary mission of Penn State 's Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture is to promote the highest quality education for its student body.
The program seeks to provide opportunities to pursue depth of expertise in certain key areas of the discipline, while enriching students' overall understanding of the profession. It also endeavors to contribute to the scholarship and outreach agendas of graduate faculty and associated Centers.
